Our last Afro-Cuban Dance Workshop was in the middle of October and we had no idea the level of response and enthusiasm would be as incredible as it was. It has taken some time to get the next ACDW together so that we could get the right mix in order to be even better than the last. This time we are bringing in Shayne Carter from Indianapolis, owner of the Organic Rhythms Dance Studio. Shayne has taught at the Cincinnati Salsa Congress as well as the most recent Columbus Salsa Fest. She is currently a member of the Afro-Cuban dance troupe “Sancocho”
As with all of the Afro-Cuban Dance Workshops, you can expect the highest quality live drumming accompaniment to be found in Central Ohio. We are also going to be in a much larger studio space with an entire wall of mirrors and nice moderate temperature. The material that Shayne will be covering will include Palo, Orisha dances, Rumba, and Bomba.
Full details to arrive shortly, but what we can tell you is that it will be taught by Shayne Carter of Indianapolis. We spotted this regional Afro-Cuban star teaching at the Columbus Salsa Fest and knew she was someone that Columbus needed more of.

Seasonal Shanelle and Tudcin
This last Vintage Salsa Night before the big Holiday blitz, and the dancers came out to celebrate in festive Red & White. During the night we also celebrated the birthdays of Shanelle and Gwen with a traditional Salsa Birthday Dance. All in all, it was a great night and a great kick off for the holidays!

It was a cold and rainy night, but Columbus still came out to dance! It was a day of Hello’s and Goodbye’s… we hosted the graduation party for the students recently finishing MÁS y Mambo Salsa Essentials series. We also said goodbye to Columbus dancer Esther Ortiz. She will be moving to San Diego in two weeks. It’s been great knowing and dancing with you!

It was one of the first weeks of genuinely cool weather but it didn’t stop a mass of long time and first time salsa dancers from coming out to yesterday’s Vintage Salsa Night.

Autumn had settled in without doubt for our Vintage Salsa Night. There is a path carved in the fallen leaves that points to the front door of El Vaquero… a path carved by dancers looking for the most danceable music to be found. If you follow that path to the source, you’ll find slammin’ hard salsa, fun-loving salseros, and the best dance atmosphere around. Not to mention that you can also find delicious margaritas and queso dip that will rock your socks.
Duane Wrenn, renowned dance instructor from Detroit, will instruct a Rumba workshop in the traditional styles of Yambu and Guaguanco. These two forms of Cuban Rumba are only a small sampling of duane’s vast knowledge and skill in both folkloric and modern styles of dance including; Danzon, Son, Mambo, Chachacha, and Afro-Caribbean religious dances.
Through his travels and training, duane has developed a unique understanding of these dance styles and their particular historical significance. These styles of dance stand at the heart of one of the most influential melting pots for African and European musical culture. Regardless of your dance background (if any!), you will not want to miss this fantastic opportunity to learn from one of the greatest instructors in the Midwest.
In this workshop you will get:
Warm up with Afro-Cuban body movement
Fundamentals of Rumba
Guaganco dance intensive
Yambu class for all levels
Live drummers in the folkloric tradition
The history and mindset of Rumba
Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. This class may be taken barefoot or with flats, heels not recommended. Women will need to bring a knee-length skirt and men will need a bandanna. Space is limited so register today!

It was another great night in Columbus and we were honored by some more out of town visitors. We had a few more guests make the long trek from Pittsburgh just to hear the great music and share our great experiences. Vintage Salsa Nights has also been such a success that El Vaquero wanted to begin staffing the bar in the back room. It is a strange road we walk… just a few months ago we walked into El Vaquero with nothing more than a dream and tried to sell them on the merits of holding a salsa night, and now they are helping us make it even better!

This is going to be the first entry in the CapCity Salsa Blog that is not centered around the music and goings-on of a Vintage Salsa Night and so, we thought it would be appropriate to start with a minor Salsa health check-up. The same way you might go to the doctor in order to get a baseline assessment done, we’re going to start with a baseline assessment of the salsa scene here in Columbus. read more »

It’s a well established trend that your second night is one of the toughest. Part of it is that everyone wants to come to a grand opening, and then all of the people that only come occasionally have just come, so they won’t be coming back for a while. For us here at CapCity Salsa, we came in fresh off the high of an amazing first event… and I am here to say that Columbus came out again to say that they love to dance to that rich, danceable salsa beat. We’re stoked. We’re excited. We’re ready to do it again, and from the feedback we are receiving… it sounds like everyone else feels exactly the same.
In related news, our next event will be Salsa at Gallery Hop on October 3rd from 5pm to 10pm. This is a free event open to the existing dance community and anyone that happens to be walking by. This will be out-door, on-the-sidewalk dancing so bring your tennis shoes or Vans. If you can’t make it for the whole time, no worries. Think of Salsa at Gallery Hop as a BBQ without the food. Come, dance, hang out, dance, look at some art, dance, go to a restaurant, dance. It’s big fun, and there is just something special about dancing outside.
One last thing, check the gallery for photos from the Vintage Salsa Night
